International Rectifier Pledges Funding to CPES

International Rectifier, (IR), together with the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES), a research center sponsored by the National Science Foundation, today announced an initiative for the development of a strategic power electronics technology roadmap.

Thought to be the first of its kind, the objective of the roadmap is to help advance the course of technology inside the industry as well as establish research requirements for CPES by defining a 10-year development path. Specific focus will be given to advancements needed in two areas, low-horsepower motor drives and low-voltage high current power supplies. Both areas represent significant hurdles for a broad spectrum of equipment makers including computers, cars and appliances as manufacturers strive to improve energy efficiency and extend device performance.

One of few National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers, CPES was established in August 1998 to provide the nation with the capabilities to become a world leader in power electronics. The Center is a consortium of five universities including Virginia Tech, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, North Carolina A&T State University, and University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez.

In addition, over 80 companies have become CPES industry partners, helping to underwrite and further their mission. International Rectifier was the first member to pledge funding for the roadmap development and it is believed that other industry members will follow suit.
