Spotlight on Digital Power
This device integrates a programmable interface port and a hot-swap controller that exceeds the standard IEEE 802.af specifications, allowing designers to operate PoE appliances at any power level up to 30 W. For greater flexibility, the LM5073 separates the PD interface from the dc-dc converter to support a wide variety of isolated and nonisolated dc-dc converter topologies.
For offline power supplies, Texas Instruments introduced a single-chip PFC controller IC featuring the company’s Natural Interleaving technology. Using this technology the UCC28060 controller significantly reduces ripple current compared to single-phase or alternative “master-slave” interleaved solutions. Natural Interleaving also enables light-load phase management and distribution of magnetic components to improve thermal management.
Targeting loads ranging from 75 W to 800 W, the UCC28060 also incorporates a failsafe overvoltage protection circuit, which provides dual paths of voltage sensing to protect against shorts to an intermediate voltage. In addition, sensorless current shaping protects the system from potential damage that may otherwise occur during “brown-out” conditions and recovery.
Fairchild Semiconductor introduced the Green FPS e-Series, a family of Fairchild Power Switch (FPS) products that provide high efficiency and system reliability in flyback power supply designs at 25 W and below. These 8-pin devices, which target applications such as DVD players, set top boxes, and LCD monitors, combine a fully avalanche rated SenseFET, a current-mode PWM chip and various protection functions.
Based on Fairchild’s valley switching technique, the Green FPS products raise efficiency by 1% and reduce EMI up to 5 dB compared to hard-switching converter topologies Using burst mode operation, the Green FPS e-Series devices reduce standby power to less than 0.2 W at no load or below 1 W at 0.5-W load. This performance meets requirements established by the California Energy Commission, the EU Code of Conduct, and the Group for Energy Efficient Appliances.
Addressing the green benefits of LED lighting, Zetex Semiconductors unveiled the ZXLD1362 LED driver, which drives up to 16 high-power LEDs with an adjustable output current of up to 1 A. Operating from a 6-V to 60-V supply and achieving up to 95% efficiency, this chip supports a range of flexible LED brightness and thermal management schemes.
The ZXLD1362 integrates a 60-V MOS switch and a high-side output current sensing circuit, enabling LEDs to benefit from ground referenced return paths that are particularly importance in architectural lighting. The chip is housed in a 2.8-mm x 2.9-mm TSOT23-5 package.
