40V, 1MHz DC-DC Controller Offers A Rugged Solution

Mar 8, 2010 11:26 AM

40V, 1MHz dc-dc Controller is well suited for industrial power supplies, PLCs (programmable logic controllers), CNC (computer numerical control) systems, industrial computers, and base stations. The MAX15046's patent-pending current-limit architecture provides temperature-compensated, lossless current sensing across the low-side MOSFET. This architecture protects the DC-DC components from damage during output-overload or short-circuit conditions without requiring a current-sense resistor. The current-limit algorithm ensures monotonic turn-on into the pre-biased bus, while adaptive internal digital soft-start reduces the input inrush current. The MAX15046 also includes an enable input with a precise reference and power-good output to simplify power sequencing. Internal thermal shutdown provides an additional layer of protection.

The MAX15046 utilizes an externally programmable fixed-frequency architecture to alleviate the complexity of EMI filter design. The operating frequency is programmable from 100kHz to 1MHz. An internal, ±1% accurate reference allows the output voltage to be programmed from 0.6V to 85% of Vin using an external resistor-divider. The device includes high-performance drivers to deliver up to 25A of output current.

The MAX15046 is packaged in a small, 16-pin QSOP; a high-power, exposed-pad version is available for rugged industrial environments. The device is fully specified over the -40 °C to +125 °C automotive temperature range. Prices start at $1.90 (1000-up, FOB USA).
