28-V Battery Charger Is Small and Safe

Apr 9, 2008 3:00 PM

Maxim Integrated Products’ MAX8814 single-cell Li-ion battery charger is distinguished by its robustness and high level of integration. Rated for a single input of up to 28 V, the 4-mm x 4-mm chip integrates a current-sense circuit, MOSFET pass transistor, thermal regulation circuitry, and needs no reverse-blocking diode.

Device type: Single-cell Li-ion charger
Input voltage range: 4.25 V to 28 V with input overvoltage protection above 7 V
Charging current: 1 A rms max
Quiescent Current: With IC disabled, input current is 0.5 mA max
Features: integrates Maxim's temperature and constant-current, constant-voltage regulation circuitry to eliminate overheating during fast-charging and to simplify hardware design; overvoltage-protection circuitry enables charger to withstand input transients up to 28 V; allows fast-charge current adjustment through an external resistor; autobooting circuit monitors the system-booting signal and input-power status, and provides an enable signal to start system operation; soft start; 300 mV dropout at 500 mA
Operating temperature range: -40°C to +85°C
Packaging: 2-mm x 2-mm, 8-pin TDFN
RoHS compliant? yes
Target applications: cell phones, smartphones, USB applications, Bluetooth devices, and other handheld equipment in which safety, charging speed, and size are of significant concern.
Pricing: starts at $1.15 each in quantities of 2500.
