ICs Simplify Secondary Feedback and Protection Circuits

Mar 12, 2008 10:50 PM

ASIC Advantage’s IPS20 and IPS21 power management ICs simplify the design of secondary-based feedback and protection circuit implementations. Chips are said to be ideal for controlling voltage and current on the secondary of an isolated power system.

Device type: low-voltage, current-sensing precision feedback controllers
Features: dual error amplifiers for monitoring of two signals, with both amplifiers OR’d and sourcing high-side driven opto-coupler for closure of the control loop; voltage error amplifier internally generated voltage reference is trimmed to 1.20V, the second error amplifier is intended to implement either current feedback control or secondary side current limit and has its own internal reference; 4-V shunt regulator
Output current: Up to 50 A
Output voltage: down to 1.2 V
Current sense voltage: 50 mV or 100 mV
Operating current: 3 mA typ. provided through a pull-up resistor to a secondary voltage for the internal 4-V shunt regulator
Operating temperature range: 0ºC to 70ºC or -40ºC to 85ºC
Packaging: 8-Pin PDIP or 8-Pin SOIC
RoHS compliant? yes
Target applications: fast chargers for power tools, battery eliminators, industrial and benchtop power supplies
Pricing: $0.26 to $0.28 each in 1,000-piece quantities An evaluation board, AAEV2021, for testing of either component is available for $75.
Availability: Samples available now
Data sheet posted on web? yes, see www.in-plug.com/datasheets/IPS20-21_rev3_April07.pdf

Notes: The IPS21 internal reference on current error amplifier is trimmed to 100 mV. The IPS20 also has a current limiting error amplifier, but has a lower 50-mV reference with unique reference voltage compensation, where the temperature variation is intended.
