XP Power announced three high performance ranges of surface mount (SMD) DC-DC converters rated at 1, 3 and 6 Watts of output power with single and dual outputs. The ISB series provides 1W of output power, the ISC 3W and the ISX is a 6W converter.
The small size of the converters takes up less PCB space, giving designers more room to add extra features, alternatively to reduce the overall size of their end product. The ISB is a diminutive 0.74 x 0.68 x 0.34", the ISC measures just 0.94 x 0.71 x 0.32", and the ISX comes in at 1.0 x 0.87 x 0.4".
Featuring extended operating temperature ranges, the ISC and ISX series operate over -40 to +100 °C, while the ISB is rated from -40 to +95 °C. Offering 4:1 and 2:1 input voltage ranges, the converters are suitable for applications with inputs ranging from 5 - 75VDC. Comprising single and dual output models for versatility, various combinations of single output models from 3.3 to 24VDC and dual output models with ±5, ±9, ±12, ±15 and ±24 VDC are available.
Specific areas and applications for the converters include automation and process control, broadcast, fixed telecom, instrumentation, networking/datacom/computing, mobile communications and in special equipment.
Behlman Electronics Inc.'s VPXtra Reconfiguration Program, has created the VPXtra1500CS3 to support high-end industrial and military applications where only single-phase AC power is available.
Now, users can choose either the Behlman VPXtra1500CS for applications powered by a 3-phase AC power source, or the new Behlman VPXtra1500CS3 for applications powered by 1-phase AC power source.
Both units are VITA 62, Open VPX compliant 6U front-end modules that deliver 1500 Watts of 33 VDC power, and have input current harmonics that comply with MIL-STD-461 (CE101) and MIL-STD-1399. In addition, these front-end modules have no minimum load requirement and have over-voltage and short-circuit protection, as well as over-current and thermal protection.
VPXtra1500CS is Power Factor Corrected and can be powered from 3-phase 115/200 VAC, 60Hz utility ground power, 400Hz aircraft power, or 115 VAC, 3-phase, Delta shipboard power. The new VPXtra1500CS3 is also Power Factor Corrected, and accepts from 85-265 VAC, 47-440Hz input, which assures compatibility with standard US or aircraft single-phase power as well as 220, 230 or 240 VAC Euro power at 50Hz.
AEM Components introduces the first SMD fuse lines, the QA and QF series, specifically designed to meet the AEC-Q200 automotive standard. By designing the fuses for AEC-Q200 qualification, the SMD fuses provide high reliability even in severe automotive conditions such as temperature, moisture, corrosion and mechanical vibration. The fuses are also 100% lead- and halogen-free. In contrast, competitive products offer commercial-grade fuses for automotive applications, which may not address erosion and other automotive challenges. The new QA and QF series are suitable for communication and infotainment, powertrain systems, battery management systems (BMS) in EV and hybrid vehicles.
Texas Instruments (TI) introduced the industry's first fully integrated power management solution for double date rate (DDR)2, DDR3 and DDR3L memory subsystems in automotive and industrial applications. The TPS54116-Q1 DC/DC buck converter is a 2.95-V to 6-V input, 4-A synchronous step-down converter with a 1-A peak sink/source DDR termination and buffered reference that reduces system size by up to 50 percent compared to discrete implementations.
Designed for automotive applications such as infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and instrument clusters, the TPS54116-Q1 can also power DDR memory in telecommunication, test and measurement, and factory automation equipment. Used in conjunction with TI's WEBENCH® online design tools, the TPS54116-Q1 simplifies power conversion and speeds the power-supply design process. The TPS54116-Q1 buck converter provides up to 2.5-MHz switching frequency and minimizes solution size by integrating the MOSFETs and reducing inductor size. The switching frequency can be set above the medium-wave radio band for noise-sensitive applications and is synchronizable to an external clock.
CUI Inc. announced the expansion of its VOF open frame ac-dc power supply family with the introduction of 185, 225 and 280 W models. The VOF 185, VOF 225 and VOF 280 series are higher-power additions to CUI's latest-generation open frame ac-dc power portfolio ranging from 6 to 150 W. Designed to offer a combination of economy and performance in a compact, industry standard 3" x 5" footprint, the single output power supplies deliver efficiencies up to 91% and no-load power consumption as low as 0.5 W at 230 Vac for energy-conscious ITE, industrial and consumer electronics applications.
The three new VOF series feature a wide universal input voltage range of 90 to 277 Vac and offer output voltage options of 12, 15, 24, 36 and 48 Vdc. All models provide an operating temperature range at full load from -20 up to +50°C with forced air cooling, derating to 50% load at +70°C. The new power supply family also carries UL/cUL and TUV 60950-1 safety certifications while meeting EN 55022 Class B and FCC Class B limits for radiated emissions.
The series has an MTBF of 250,000 hours minimum at full load at 25°C ambient, calculated per MIL-HDBK-217F. Protections for over voltage, over current and short circuit are included as well as 0.98 typical power factor with active PFC.
Linear Technology Corporation announces the LTC3126, a 2.5A, 42V synchronous step-down switching regulator with an integrated dual input PowerPath™ control. A unique power stage topology enables operation from either of two independent power sources, with seamless, internally controlled transitions between inputs to ensure a stable output voltage during hot-plug and power source disconnect events. Internal power switches and synchronous rectification combine to deliver 95% efficiency over a wide voltage range, enable a fast transient response and ensure excellent loop stability while switching at 2MHz. This allows designers to avoid critical noise-sensitive frequency bands such as AM radio, while providing a highly compact solution footprint. The LTC3126's current mode topology is internally compensated, eliminating the need for external compensation components. Burst Mode® operation maintains high efficiency at low output currents while keeping peak-to-peak output ripple below 1%. Further, it features a quiescent current under 2µA in no-load standby conditions, ideal for always-on systems and portable applications. The LTC3126's wide 2.4V to 42V input and 0.818V to VIN output voltage ranges are well suited for automotive applications which must regulate through cold-crank, load dump and stop-start scenarios. Other key applications include portable industrial/communications test equipment, battery and supercapacitor backup power systems, automotive power with battery backup, uninterruptible power supplies, and systems powered by unregulated wall adapters or single to multi-cell stacks of most battery chemistries.
Phihong released a compact, portable 1.8kVA inverter with an integral battery charger designed with four standard lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery packs. Designed to provide original equipment manufacturers with reliable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective power solutions, the new inverter is engineered to deliver 120Vac at 16A/1.8kVA (continuous) for operating power tools, and features a 40A peak current for motor start applications.
When fully charged, the inverter's four standard 20V/5Ah battery packs deliver a run-time of ~25 minutes at 1.8kVA, or up to 20 hours at lighter loads or with larger battery packs.
The new inverters are compliant with FCC Class B radiated and conducted emissions, and with the International Electromechanical Commission (IEC) 61000 standards for lighting surge, ESD, brownout, and radiated susceptibility. The 1.8kVA inverters feature over-temperature, over-voltage, and over-load protections, and are certified to cUL safety specifications. The rugged design also withstands a three-time, 1m "drop test" onto concrete.
The 1.8kVA inverter measures 19" x 10" x 6" (L x W x H) and weighs 17.5lb without batteries. Allowable operating temperatures for the inverter span -20ºC to +50ºC.
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced that it has extended its AEC-Q200-qualified Professional Thin Film MELF resistors to tighter tolerance in the low-ohmic range below 1 W for the 0204 and 0207 case sizes. In addition to providing a low temperature coefficient, the improved Vishay Beyschlag MMA 0204 and MMB 0207 allow for more precise current measurement in LED lighting, industrial, automotive, and renewable energy applications with high stability and reliability requirements than previous-generation devices.
Built on an advanced metal film technology, the devices released today offer an extended resistance range down to 0.22 W with tolerance of ± 1 %, low TCR of ± 50 ppm/K, and rated power dissipation to 1 W at +70 °C. The professional thin film MELF resistors, available in 0102, 0204, and 0207 case sizes, feature a robust design, intrinsic sulfur resistance, and excellent overall stability that exceeds class 0.25.

Wolfspeed, a Cree Company, has introduced a 1000V MOSFET that enables a reduction in overall system cost, while improving system efficiency and decreasing system size. The new MOSFET, specially optimized for fast charging and industrial power supplies, enables a 30 percent reduction in component count while achieving more than 3x increase in power density and a 33 percent increase in output power.
Designers can reduce component count by moving from silicon-based, three-level topologies to simpler two-level topologies made possible by the 1000 Vds rating of the SiC MOSFET. The increase in output power in a reduced footprint is realized by the ultra-low output capacitance ,as low as 60pF, which significantly lowers switching losses. This device enables operations at higher switching frequencies, which shrinks the size of the resonant tank elements and decreases overall losses, thus reducing heatsink requirements. Wolfspeed has determined these proof-points by constructing a 20kW full-bridge resonant LLC converter and comparing it to a market-leading 15kW silicon system.
Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Limited (AOS) announced the AOC3860, a common-drain 12V dual n-channel MOSFET with the lowest on-resistance in the product family of 2.15mW typical at 4.5V gate drive. This new device provides further improved source-to-source resistance, which is a critical factor for smart phone makers to achieve faster battery charge with a higher charging current. The AOC3860 is the latest product with the best Rss and the smallest mounting size in the AlphaDFN™ family, which is a market-proven product family in the battery protection module market. The typical Rss is 2.15mW with 4.5V gate voltage, and 2.25mW with 3.8V gate voltage. The chip size is further reduced to a 3.05x1.77mm.
The demand for faster charge comes from both the higher capacity of the battery pack and heavy use of the smart phone with data ranging from email and web browsing to video streaming. With the heavy duty use and shorter time for standby, charging has become a great feature for the newest smart phones. The market is seeing charging power increase from the traditional 5W to larger wattages of 15W or 25W, by raising either output voltage or output current. For battery packs, this always translates to a higher charging current. A MOSFET is a critical part of the battery charging circuit, which needs to provide reliable protection with minimum power loss and temperature rise.
