SMD Resistors Offer High Power Handling

Aug 2, 2011 11:59 PM

High power SMD ceramic-based chip resistors are susceptible to solder joint failure, cracking, and pulling the solder lands off the PCB. This is due to the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion between standard PCB materials, such as FR4 and ceramic. Stackpole's SM Series surface mount molded wirewounds have compliantterminations that expand and contract with the PCB eliminating those concerns. In addition, the SM Series is capable of power ratings beyond 4 W which are not normally supported by a single ceramic substrate film chip resistor.

The SM Series wirewounds are available in power ratings from 1 to 4 W, in resistance values from 0.01? to 5K?, and in tolerances as low as 0.1%. It is an excellent choice for a variety of power control applications, motor controls, protection circuits for motors and utility meters, high power instrumentation, optical sources and power meters, high-speed communication systems, electric vehicles, medical grade lasers and other medical equipment, aerospace instrumentation, and other types of test equipment.

The SM Series is available in tape and reel packaging in quantities that vary with package size/power rating. Pricing varies with size, resistance value, and tolerance, and ranges from $0.31 each to approximately $1.05 each in full reel quantities.
