High-Temperature Supercaps Target Portable Devices

Apr 23, 2008 6:22 PM

From Tecate Industries, the CAP-XX H series supercapacitors feature a high-temperature electrolyte that extends both the operating voltage (from 4.5 V to 5.5 V), and the max operating temperature (from 75ºC to 85ºC). This high-temperature specification enables the supercapacitors to operate reliably in portable and wireless devices that are exposed to extreme heat.

Device type: single- and dual-cell 5.5-V supercapacitors
Capacitance range: up to 0.4 F at 5.5 V (HW series); up to 0.7 F (HS series)
ESR: as low as 100 mΩ (HW Series) or 55 mΩ (HS Series)
Current ratings: single-pulse rating is 20 A, RMS rating is 4 A
Features: power densities as high as 71.5 kW/l and energy densities up to 5.5kJ/l or 1.5Wh/l
Operating temperature range: -40ºC to +85ºC
Packaging: 28.5-mm x 17.0-mm (HW Series) or 39.0-mm x 17.0-mm (HS Series) footprint with a 0.90-mm to 2.90-mm profile in prismatic packages
RoHS compliant? yes
Target applications: space-constrained portable wireless, consumer and industrial devices where temperature is a factor, and in which pulsed loads draw more power than the voltage source can readily provide; suited for use in slim cell phone handsets, driving peak-power functions such as high-brightness LED flash and audio circuitry
Pricing: unit pricing in quantities of 1000 ranges from $3.36 to $6.25 for the HS Series and from $3.36 to $5.91 for the HW Series
Availability: available now
Data sheets posted on web? yes, see www.tecategroup.com
