Line Power System for “Triple-Play” and Wireless Networks

Valere Power recently announced the Line Power Solutions family, a complete telecommunications power system for extending battery backed-up power from a centralized source to remote cabinet locations for “triple-play” voice, video and data service offerings or wireless access points.

Line power systems send power from a central office (CO), where batteries or generators provide backup in the event of a power outage, across unused copper telephone lines to a remote fiber-optic or wireless network cabinet where space limitations and maintenance costs make it hard to locate power equipment and batteries. These systems reduce deployment costs by reusing existing network cabling and by removing the need for ac utility service and batteries in each remote node.

Valere’s Line Power Solutions family includes both head-end source and far-end conversion products. They are unique in the industry for their ability to scale from two to 40 inputs in a shelf to more than 400 inputs in a rack. Thus, they are cost effective for small optical network unit (ONU) installations that need only 50 W all the way to dozens of large fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) cabinets needing thousands of watts.

“Triple-play services and IP-based television is one of the biggest changes in the telecom network in our generation. Through its technology breakthroughs and unique features, Valere’s line-power products are a key enabler of this revolution change,” said Greg Fasullo, Valere Power co-founder and vice president of sales and marketing.

Valere’s line-power solution is composed of a Head End Converter for use at the CO or remote terminals and a Far End Converter for remote locations. Both products are based on patented Valere technology that offers greater than 90% power conversion efficiency.

The converter modules are hot swappable and the system can span from 50 W to 1000 W of output power in the same compact package. Both the Head End and Far End Converter systems are available in limited quantities in January 2005 and in production quantities in 1Q05. Prices range from $200 for an entry-level far end system to $1,000 for an entry-level head end system.
