Tantalum Capacitors for Military and Aerospace Applications

Sep 15, 2003 12:00 PM, Edited by PETech Staff

With field-proven strength and durability, AVX Corp.’s extensive range of tantalum capacitors is ideal for military and aerospace applications where absolute reliability and endurance in severe conditions are critical. The AVX tantalum product line for high reliability applications consists of TAZ, TBJ and CWR series.

AVX also offers an extensive range of “COTS Plus” enhanced reliability tantalum capacitors. Using a comprehensive array of testing capabilities, AVX can offer a wider range of products with military-type testing. The CWR09 style, commercially available as the TAZ Series, provides maximum selection of surface-mount capacitors covering the full capacitance/voltage range. The CWR11 style, commercially available as the TBJ Series, is fully qualified to MIL-PRF-55365/8 and is designed to EIA standard sizes. Both the TAZ and TBJ Series are “COTS Plus” qualified.

Typical specifications for the AVX line of tantalum military and aerospace line of SMT capacitors are:

  • TAZ Series (CWR09), capacitance range of 0.1 µF to 470 µF, and capacitance tolerances are ±20%, ±10% and ±5%. Offering eight case sizes, the ‘A’ case size is the smallest molded military tantalum capacitor with measurements of 2.54 mm × 1.27 mm × 1.27 mm.
  • TBJ Series (CWR11), capacitance range of 0.1 µF to 470 µF and capacitance tolerances are ±20%, ±10% and ±5%. Offering five case sizes, this series features molded body/compliant termination construction, polarity and capacitance marking.
  • Newly arrived are the CWR19 and CWR29 series. The CWR19 offers an extended range of capacitance values in standard product and the CWR29 offers the same in the low ESR series. AVX is the first to qualify in these offerings.

Specifications for the above are over the operating temperature range of –55°C to +125°C, with the most popular ratings available from stock to five weeks.
