NEMA Releases Standard on Industrial Control Device Diagrams, Device Designations, and Symbols

Sep 6, 2002 12:00 PM, Edited by PE Tech staff

NEMA, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, Rosslyn, Va., recently released ICS 19-2002, Industrial Controls and Systems: Diagrams, Device Designations, and Symbols.

According to Richard Schneider, manager of engineering and quality assurance at Josslyn Clark Controls, “ICS 19 satisfies the need for a ‘stand-alone’ reference for those communicating industrial control device information on diagrams and other written documents. This information was heretofore included in Clause 9 of the more comprehensive ICS 1. The document includes certain definitions to aid in standardizing communications, both via graphical presentation as well as other written and verbal conveyances, of information often used in industrial control and systems. It serves as a catalyst to help ensure that the intent of the author and interpretation of the reader is synonymous.”

ICS 19 may be purchased for $57.00 by contacting Global Engineering Documents at (800) 854-7179 (within the U.S.), (303) 397-7956 (international), (303) 397-2740 (fax), or on the Internet at www.global.ihs.com. It may also be downloaded for free from the NEMA Web site at www.nema.org.
