JUNE 2001 EDITORIAL PREVIEW
COVER STORY: PASSIVE COMPONENTS - Power Film Capacitor Terminal Technologies Impact Performance, Reliability

Illinois Capacitor Inc.’s Mark Gebbia discusses how Power Film Capacitor Terminal Technologies Impact Performance & Reliability, which covers various terminal configurations.
AC and dc film capacitors must provide very high reliability when operating at high voltages and high currents. This article describes the characteristics of various terminal configurations that can impact capacitor reliability and have catastrophic results at these power levels. Terminal characteristics can also affect ESL, ESR and mounting considerations. Include your advertising message in the industry’s most respected publication. Planned Editorial Lineup:
  • Power Semiconductors - Power MOSFET Trends in DC-DC Converters
Michael Speed and Guy Moxey of Vishay Siliconix discuss development and packaging technologies in Power MOSFET Trends in DC-DC Converters.
Manufacturers of dc-dc converters are being required to design high-density converters with improved efficiency, smaller footprint and lower cost despite increasing output loads. This article presents the trends in silicon development and packaging techniques to aid the dc-dc designer in obtaining power MOSFETs for primary and secondary applications. The primary focus is on MOSFETs used in 48V and below input applications.
  • Power Supply Design - Input Current Mode Controller Meets Athlon Processor Dynamic Performance Requirements
Semtech Corp.’s Mehrzad Koohian describes a dc-dc converter design for a 1.4GHz processor in Input Current Mode Controller Meets Athlon Processor Dynamic Performance Requirements.
The Athlon Processor, with clocks as high as 1.4GHz and front side bus speeds of 133Mhz can pose serious questions about the dc-dc converter performance. The tight static error band and the strict transient response requirements mandate a dc-dc converter with robust, time domain reaction to processor state changes. This article describes the SC2422 that operates in the input current mode, with cycle by cycle current sharing, providing an optimal solution while reducing the cost of output capacitors and practically eliminating the need for Oscon capacitors. There are several issues governing the response of the dc-dc converter to processor power demands.
  • Motor Drive Design - Motor Drive Fault Detection and Management Systemfs
Victor Donescu of Kaman Aerospace Corp. focuses on fault management for a permanent magnet, multi-motor drive system in Motor Drive Fault Detection and Management System.
This article focuses on the fault management scheme of a permanent magnet multi-motor drive system where the individual units are networked in master-slave architecture via an RS485 serial bus. It presents the modular approach of the system in which each elementary unit is a 500 HP permanent magnet motor drive and details the control logic behind the fault manager.
  • Sensors - Analysis of Loss-Less Current Sensing in Multi-Phase High Current DC-DC Converters
Analysis of Loss-Less Current Sensing in Multi-Phase High Current DC-DC Converters by Wenkang Huang of ON Semiconductor presents a shared technique for converter phases.
New microprocessors require high-current and high-efficiency power supplies with fast transient response, which involves the use of current sensors. This article presents a loss-less current sensor scheme that can be shared among the phases of a multiphase synchronous buck converter. This article also analyzes the sensing technique in terms of temperature, frequency, current level, and component tolerances.
  • Battery-Based Systems - Line Frequency, Low-Cost Lead-Acid Battery Charger
Line Frequency, Low-Cost Lead-Acid Battery Charger by Paul Chinski of Charles Industries describes the design of a lead-acid battery charger intended for cost-sensitive applications.
This article describes the design of a lead-acid battery charger intended for cost-sensitive applications. The design implements a power MOSFET switch as the element that produces phase controlled charging current. This allows use of voltage sensing and a voltage loop and current loop control. Instead of an SMPS, the charger operates from the ac line via a transformer.

  • Closing the Loop: PSMA Brings the Power Supply Industry TogetherThis article discusses the need for broader communication in the power supply industry, which prompted a consortium of engineers and executives to create the Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) in February 1985. Those volunteers represented captive and merchant power supply manufacturers, sales reps, market research analysts, and manufacturers of components used in power supplies. PSMA members now interface with individuals representing every facet of the power electronics industry
