Boost Regulators

Dec 1, 2003 12:00 PM, Edited by PETech Staff

The NCP144x series of 280-kHz and 560-kHz boost regulators from ON Semiconductor offers design engineers low-cost power conversion solutions for a wide range of battery-operated applications.

Each of the four new current mode boost regulators features a 4-A, 40-V integrated power switch that eliminates the need for an external FET—thus saving cost and board space. The design’s flexibility allows the parts to operate in most power supply configurations, including boost, flyback, forward, inverting and SEPIC. Because the devices operate at voltages ranging from 2.7 V to 30 V, they accommodate numerous applications including test equipment, handheld meters, portable printers and computers and process control.

The high 280-khz or 560-kHz operating frequencies allow the use of smaller passive components to save board space. For added design flexibility, the NCP144x family can be synchronized with an external frequency source— up to 500 kHz for the NCP1442 and NCP1443 and up to 1 MHz for the NCP1444 and NCP1445. A shutdown capability minimizes battery drain by reducing the typical standby current draw to 12 µA. A comprehensive set of protection features provides added power distribution stability.
