Point-of-Load DC-DC Converters

SynQor Inc. has launched a new line of nonisolated dc-dc converters with a wide input range from 3 V to 5.5 V. The NiQor series can deliver up to 16 A of total output current in an industry standard single-in-line package (SIP). The new line of nonisolated, point-of-load converters represents SynQor’s expanding product line for distributed power applications and intermediate bus architectures.

The NQ04 series modules accommodate standard input bus voltages of 3.3 V and 5 V while delivering 15 A of current at fixed voltages of 0.9-V, 1-V, 1.2-V, 1.5-V, 1.8-V, 2.5-V and 3.3-V outputs. SynQor also offers a wide trim module that delivers up to 16 A, and can be trimmed to any voltage from 0.75 V to 3.6 V with a single resistor to allow for maximum flexibility and reduced SKU count.

The modules employ synchronous rectification and a fixed switching frequency to achieve very high efficiencies up to 95%, allowing full power with no derating at ambient temperatures up to 70°C under natural convection. Onboard input and output filtering keeps input ripple currents and output noise to a minimum, eliminating the need to add expensive I/O capacitors. Employing the industry-standard SIP package, the units measure 2 in. x 0.55 in. x 0.29 in., (50.8 mm x 14 mm x 7.4 mm) and can be configured in either vertical or horizontal mounting orientations. SynQor plans to introduce a surface-mount version of the modules in 2004.

The nonisolated NiQor series offer point-of-load power processing for a variety of low voltage core logic levels required for today’s advanced DSPs and ASICs. Combined with SynQor’s expanding product line of PowerQor isolated converters and BusQor dc transformers, power designers can implement a true Intermediate Bus Architecture (IBA). Supplying power to an array of different low voltage loads can be accomplished most economically with one point of isolation from an intermediate bus. The NiQor series then allows point-of-load power from the isolated high current bus for under $1/A.

The NiQor converters include a full complement of control and protection features such as on/off control, remote sense, input UVLO, over-current shutdown, output OVP, thermal shutdown, and industry standard output voltage trim.

Sample and production quantities of the NQ04 series of SIP converters are available immediately with a four to six week lead-time. The modules are priced at $15.80 in OEM quantities.
