NEBS GR-1089-CORE Testing Capability

TUV Rheinland of North America Inc. recently announced its Raleigh, N.C., laboratory was certified to conduct Verizon NEBS GR-1089-CORE testing.

The certification for Verizon GR-1089- CORE, which is required by the telephone companies, signifies that TUV can now provide testing and product approval for telecom equipment manufacturers that sell electrical products to telephone company locations. This testing consists of EMC and electrical safety criteria, intended to ensure that equipment performs reliably and safely in the telephone network.

The NEBS (Network Equipment and Building Systems) testing capability follows a recent audit by Verizon where TUV received Verizon Independent Test Laboratory (ITL) Accreditation under the National Technical Systems (NTS) Testing Certification Witnessing Program (TCWP). This new accreditation complements the existing range of services offered by TUV's EMC Division.

The NEBS process involves testing equipment to determine if it can withstand the effects of ESD, radio frequency interference, power surge lightning and other EMC phenomena. Following any tests, TUV telecom experts provide engineering ideas or technical assistance if deviations of performance are detected.

“We are delighted to provide our customers worldwide with yet another critical service to meet their need for getting products to market quickly,” said Bill Ronzio, TUV’s Raleigh area manager. “We look forward to working in partnership with our customers to address their needs and offer tangible solutions.”

As part of an agreement with NTS, TUV will also offer their services for the required environmental tests, GR-63-CORE. Telephone company equipment must meet these requirements as part of the ITL program to ensure equipment will perform reliably and safely in the network in environmental conditions such as vibration, earthquake, temperature, humidity airborne contaminates and fire.

“TUV's expertise in EMI, EMC and ESD test services, more than 100 years of product safety experience, and its Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) status allows us to provide the complete services required by the Regional Bell Operating Companies,” Ronzio said. “TUV can concurrently tailor the NEBS test program to encompass the equivalent European standards in order to save time and keep customers within its testing budget.”

TUV's laboratories have been assessed and accredited by NVLAP in accordance with ISO 17025 and ISO 9002. TUV facilities also hold numerous other related credentials.
