4-mm-high Inductors Handle 30 A

Apr 6, 2005 11:27 AM

Designed for the multiphase voltage regulator modules (VRMs), Pulse’s PG0255NL Series of surface-mount flat coil inductors are rated for saturation currents up to 30 A and heating currents up to 38 A, yet have a maximum profile of 4 mm. The series includes four inductors—the PG0255.201NL, PG0255.401NL, PG0255.601NL and PG0255.222NL. These coils have inductance values from 0.2 µH to 2.2 µH and dc resistance values ranging from 0.55 mΩ to 7.0 mΩ.

Pulse’s flat coil inductor windings are made of rectangular copper (flat wire) wound helically, in a fashion similar to a spring. The rectangular copper wire has a larger surface area than round wire, resulting in a reduced skin effect loss. The rectangular wire also provides more copper in the same volume than round wire to reduce the dc resistance in a low profile. In addition, the rectangular wire winding provides a self-terminating lead to increase reliability and reduce cost.

These RoHS-compliant components have a compact, standard footprint of 11.5 mm × 10.3 mm. The operating temperature for the PG0255NL series ranges from -40°C to +125°C. Prices average $0.25 per unit for quantities above 100,000 units.

Detailed technical specifications are available on datasheet P629 at www.pulseeng.com/pdf/P629.pdf.
