Converter Suited for PoE and VoIP Applications

Oct 12, 2005 12:17 PM

A 53-V, 7.6-A output half-brick dc-dc converter from Synqor powers IEEE 802.3af-compliant Power-over-LAN and VoIP applications. The PQ5553HEA08 (open-frame version) and PQ5553HEB08 (base-plated version) converters use synchronous rectification and SynQor’s patented topology to achieve high efficiencies, low power dissipation and high reliability, in a single board, open-frame or base-plated package.

With an optimized input voltage range of 38 V to 55 V and operating at 95% efficiency, the open-frame device can supply up to 265 W at 55°C ambient with just 200 linear feet per minute (LFM) (1m/s) of forced air-cooling. The base-plated option allows the addition of a heatsink to increase the available power to the full 360-W rating.

In keeping with the requirements of IEEE 802.3af, the device has a basic isolation level from input to output of 2250 Vdc, and the design has been optimized to minimize common-mode noise. The wide trim range of -50% to +5% adds additional flexibility for the user to adjust the desired output voltage. Other control and protection features include remote sensing, input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), output overvoltage protection (OVP), current limiting, short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown. The modules are priced at $97 each in OEM quantities for the open-frame version.
