Batteries Receive NEBS Certification for Seismic Zone 4 Locations

Mar 23, 2005 1:34 PM

EnerSys, manufacturer, marketer and distributor of industrial batteries, has announced that its PowerSafe DDm line of valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries has received Networks Equipment Building System (NEBS) Zone 4 seismic certification for 24-V and 48-V configurations. This certification enables telecommunications customers in the wireline and wireless segments to install DDm battery systems in earthquake-prone regions for central office and wireless site applications.

In order to receive the NEBS Zone 4 rating, the EnerSys DDm 24-V and 48-V configurations underwent and passed a number of tests, including flame retardancy; bonding and grounding; temperature, humidity and altitude effects; and earthquake office and transportation vibration. In addition, new steel framing able to withstand earthquake effects was certified by an independent third-party laboratory.

The cell design of the DDm incorporates thick 0.25-in. positive plates for an extremely long battery life of up to 20 years. The battery cells have welded epoxy, dual post seals that are 100% water bath tested in the factory and provide the high seal integrity. Leadcasted terminal posts include a large threaded copper insert that enhances the high rate performance by providing maximum conductivity. This product line ranges from 200 Ah to 2000 Ah at 25°C (77°F).

Unlike competitive systems, the EnerSys battery cells do not have to be removed from the modules during installation. Users simply set up the rack and install the modules in configurations of 2, 3, 4 or 6 cells wide and up to 8 cells high. The DDm line is NEBS certified to 6 high for the DDm125 series and 8 high for DDm50/85/100 series.
