Spotlight on Digital Power
THE AAT3672 is a single-cell Li-Ion/polymer battery charger and system management IC. Using 3-switch architecture, the dual-path device enables simultaneous battery charging and system load management. In addition, the product automatically reroutes power from the battery to the system without interruption when load requirements exceed available current. Compatible with either an AC power adapter or a USB port power source, the product regulates battery charge current and voltage for 4.2-V Li-on battery cells. Battery charge current can be programmed up to 1.6 A. Qualified across the -40°C to +85°C temperature range, the AAT3672 is available in a 14-pin, 3-mm × 3-mm TDFN package. The IC sells for $0.95 in quantities of 1000.

PSS Flyback Controllers
THE C2140 Series of primary-side-sensing (PSS) flyback controllers features a best-in-class current and voltage regulation of ±5% and targets high-volume, universal input applications rated up to 8 W. The parts also feature programmable cable compensation and switching-frequency adjustment. The C2141PX2 and C2142PX2 parts are rated at 4 W and 8 W, respectively, packaged in SOT23-6 and are available in volume. According to the company, the C2140 family eliminates the need for optocouplers and all secondary-side feedback circuitry, as well as any additional components that designers may need to specify to improve the current regulation from a typical PSS flyback design. In addition, the products use sophisticated algorithms combined with digital techniques to more accurately monitor the output voltage and provide tighter current regulation than has previously been possible, enabling quasi zero voltage switching. Other features include a programmable cable compensation of up to 10% to give tight voltage regulation at the end of the cable, while helping to minimize the copper content of the cable. The compensation is fully adjustable in the design phase, allowing one standard design to be quickly modified to accommodate different cable lengths or gauges. The controllers also can be adapted to match the required switching frequency of the end application by specifying one external component.

DC-DC Regulators
THE ADP2121 is the industry's smallest 500-mA buck regulator, according to the company. Available in a 1.3-mm × 0.9-mm wafer-level chip-scale package (WLCSP) with a height of 0.6 mm, the 6-MHz device requires only two small capacitors and one small inductor, resulting in a 35% reduction in PCB area compared with current 3-MHz buck regulator solutions. The product also features the lowest-in-class FET on resistance, helping to maintain peak efficiency above 90%. In addition, the ADP2121 operates at input voltages ranging from 2.3 V to 5.5 V, meeting the requirements for single Li-Ion, Li-Ion polymer cell and multiple alkaline/NiMH cell applications. Fixed output voltage options are available at 1.8 V, 1.82 V, 1.85 V and 1.875 V. Priced at $0.80 per unit in 1000-unit quantities, samples of the buck regulator are available now in a 6-ball WLCSP.

NiMH Charger IC
THE DS2710 is a stand-alone NiMH charger IC with alkaline-cell detection. Eliminating the need for circuit design or microcontroller programming, the device protects against system damage due to corrosive cell leakage, making it easy to add in-system NiMH charging to end equipment powered by AA or AAA batteries. Suitable for charging batteries from a USB port, the product's charge-control output regulates charge current using a switch-mode or linear control scheme. The device also offers comprehensive charge control for fast-charging NiMH cells, including precharge conditioning, negative-delta-V fast-charge termination and top-off charging. Voltage, temperature and charge-timer monitoring during all charge phases provides redundant secondary charge-termination methods for further protection against overcharge. Available in a 3-mm × 4-mm, 10-pin TQFN package, pricing for the DS2710 starts at $1.52 in quantities of 1000 and up. Samples are available now.

Pulsecap Tantalum Capacitors
AVX Corp.'s new high capacitance PulseCap capacitors are designed for applications such as PCMCIA/USB wireless express cards, where bulk capacitance is needed to boost transmitter power. These large-case-size tantalum products are rated at 2200 µF (2.2 mF)/6.3 V.A maximum case height of 2 mm makes them ideal for reduced-height applications. The “undertab” termination style — where traditional “J” leads are replaced by terminations that do not protrude outside of the outline of the case — increases volumetric efficiency and allows parts to be positioned very closely together, delivering significant space savings. PulseCap devices are RoHS compatible and capable of withstanding a soldering profile of 3× reflow at 260°C. Operating temperature range is -55°C to +125°C. Other applications include wireless data cards, metering and sensors. Pricing typically starts at $2.20 each and are available in volume with a typical lead time of 14 weeks.
