Microcontrollers Feature CAN Controllers and PWM Outputs

Oct 26, 2005 12:21 PM

STMicroelectronics has introduced a family of ARM-based microcontrollers, the STR730F Series, which addresses the emerging demand for high-performance, cost-effective and off-the-shelf 32-bit microcontrollers optimized for complex industrial applications—particularly main controller functions. A single 5-V power rail is the preferred supply configuration for industrial applications that need robust operation, and the STR730F family of ARM-based microcontrollers meets this need. In addition, the devices are specified over an extended temperature range of -40°C to 105°C and include a particularly rich set of peripherals tailored for industrial applications.

The devices feature a 32 MIPS ARM7TDMI RISC processor core, full-speed (zero wait state) access to up to 256 Kbytes of embedded Flash program memory, and a 16-channel DMA facility. In addition, the integrated peripherals such as a fast (3 µs), 16-channel, 10-bit ADC, up to 16 PWM outputs capable of supporting multiple single-phase or 3-phase motor-driving requirements, plus the industry-standard I²C and UART serial communications interfaces are included. A real-time clock and on-chip RC oscillator are provided, as well as several General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) channels. Furthermore, the devices can include up to three independent controller area network (CAN) controllers, which are supported by the STR7 software library.

Package options for the STR730F family include a TQFP144, a TQFP100 and a BGA144. Pricing in 10,000-unit quantities ranges from $4.53 to $8.99.
