Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems, a joint venture of ArvinMeritor, and the WABCO Automotive Products Group of American Standard Companies Inc. has introduced an electronic stability control system for truck/tractor applications.
Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems president and general manager Denny Sandberg said the ESC “senses a vehicle's tendency to rotate and automatically applies the brakes to reduce that risk."
The system is based on the firm’s E-version anti-lock braking system and combines features of the roll stability control (RSC) system--an option on the ABS--with added yaw (rotational) sensing.
Sandberg said the ESC improves vehicle handling and performance if there is an impending loss of control due to rotational forces that may occur as a result of rapid lane change or cornering maneuvers on slippery surfaces.
