Oshkosh Truck Corporation is teaming up with Rockwell Collins to develop Oshkosh's second-generation, self-navigating TerraMax vehicle to compete in the $2 million Pentagon-sponsored 2005 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge.
The TerraMax was one of only seven entries to complete the 1.3-mile qualifying course for the Grand Challenge. Next October, the vehicle will attempt to traverse a rugged, 175-mile, off-road course in the Mojave Desert. It will use sensor data to make its own decisions on route planning, obstacle avoidance and speed with no human intervention. The TerraMax is based on Oshkosh's Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR), originally built for the U.S. Marine Corps.
