Dear Electronics Marketer:

The most successful corporations have collaborative cultures. As our world "flattens" working in isolation is no longer viable or productive. Collaboration involves working together with a common purpose to achieve dynamic results. We form deeper relationships when we collaborate and participants share more trust, respect and a greater sense of commitment

The excellence of the CEO is multiplied when he or she works across many discipline.   The Research and Development Team works with the applications engineers and a new dynamic is created. The sales engineer at a company finds a real solution and increases his understanding of the customer - what is more important than that?

By exploring the tangible outcomes of the collaborative approach, Power Electronics Technology is pleased to introduce a new four part series. Beginning in July, in an effort to bring our readers closer to the companies they work with, and for our sponsor companies to become closer to our readers, we have created a four part  "special advertising series"  called Power Profiles

Our  Power Profiles series begins in July as follows
  •  July: Chief Executive Officers - profiling the CEOs
  • August: Research and Development - what's coming down the pike.
  • September: Customer  Solutions, real time stories of successful collaboration with companies and their customers.
  • October: Product Profiles - including a BRC card, and a one time chance  to showcase your new product at the Emerging Technologies Pavilion at the Power Systems World 06 conference in October.

Due to the limited the number of sponsors for the series, please contact me as soon as possible. I'm sure you won't want to miss out on this great opportunity! I look forward to partnering with you on The Power Of Collaboration through our Power Profiles series.

Best regards,

Judy Miller

Cover Story: Power Management
Creating Value Through Understanding Your PoE Power Solution
Thanks to IEEE 802.3af power over Ethernet (PoE) specification, data transmission lines may now conduct a specified amount of power. In this article, the Tim Kaske and Frank Cathell, ON Semiconductor, Phoenix, AZ, describe how designers can optimize the signature and detection circuitry of PoE powered devices (PDs) by implementing discrete solutions in place of fully integrated ICs. The authors present an optimized solution in both the classification/detection circuit and the dc-dc converter section to demonstrate how this approach can lower the cost of each PD and result in a significant total system cost savings.

Power Semiconductors:
Merged Structure SiC Diode Meets the PFC Boost Converter Challenge
Wide input range power factor correction (PFC) converters present some of the most difficult component challenges in ac-dc power electronics. With an operating input voltage range that can extend from 265 Vac down to 75 Vac the range of operating conditions are relatively extreme. This places high stress on both diodes and MOSFETs. In this article, Jon Mark Hancock, Applications Engineering Manager, Infineon Technologies NA, San Jose, CA, analyzes various aspects of the operating conditions and examines how a new merged structure device combining pn junction and Schottky operating modes in one diode meets these challenges, while reducing component and system costs.

Motor Power Management:Enabling Mechanical Simplicity for Inverterized Washer Applications
Using ac PWM inverters to control washing machines is an approach that’s been widely implemented. When the machine employs a permanent magnet (PM) motor, the application normally requires three Hall effect sensors. Author, Aengus Murray, International Rectifier, El Segundo, CA, describes an appliance-specific motion controller, which contains a hardware means of sensor-less sinusoidal control for PM motors via field oriented control.

Hardware/Interconnect :
The Implications of PICMG 3.0 for Power Systems Design
Most major telecoms companies now regard the Advanced Telecom Computer Architecture (ATCA) as the way of the future. The latest ATCA specification, which is documented in PICMG 3.0, defines a compact, standardized shelf structure containing up to 16 cards – including 14 hot swappable blades – each of which can demand up to 200 W of power. Author Conor Quinn, Artesyn Technologies, Eden Praiie, MN, discusses the challenges this type of system presents to power system designers.

Power Design:
High-side current amplifier forms 28V circuit breaker
The latching-comparator output on the MAX4373, a high-side current amplifier with comparator and reference, makes possible a circuit-breaker application for that device. The data-sheet circuit, however, is suitable only for supply voltages in the range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V. John Guy, Maxim Integrated Products, Sunnyvale, CA, describes how designers can extend that range to 28 V by adding a general-purpose npn transistor.

Defense Electronics
June Supplement

COTS:
Using commerical lightnigh protectors in defense applications
Investigating typical defense requirements for lightning protectors, the article describes lightning protection technology, performance characteristics and review various applications. Plus, it will include practical tips, considerations and tradeoffs when selecting the right lightning protectors for miliary applications.

Test and measurement
Defining test system in parallel with design efforts
Increasing demands for higher performance, lower cost, and faster time to market leaves no reaoom for design failure. This article examines how model-based design helps start an executable specification, define test systems and test vectors in parallel with design and development activities. The article outlines automatic test code generationa with model-based approachs specific to control circuitry for the defense and aerospace industries.

Powser Supplies
Thick-film bybrid DC-DC converters are standard brick for satellite power systems
Thick-film hybrid DC-DC converters offer unique size, weight, performance, and cost benefits for space applications. In the article, the author discusses new-generation hybrid bricks that offer substantial cost savings, reduced design lead time, extensive design analyses, and quallification documentation.
